We finally managed to get to Whale World yesterday. The kids have been wanting to go for so long, and we haven't been since they were little, so we had promised them we would go these school holidays.
They have added a lot of new exhibits since last time we went, including 4 giant old whale oil storage tanks that had been converted into movie theatres!
The kids loved the 3D whale movie where they had to wear 3D glasses, and also the shark movie.
There was also a movie where you climbed up inside an old whale oil storage tank and looked down on the movie screen on the floor which was made to look like the sea and you could see whales in the water. This one was a little too scary for the little kids as it was very dark inside and a harpoon fired off complete with smoke from a smoke machine, so they were too scared to stay and watch.
The 4th movie tank we went into had tiny little 3D people walking over a stage with a miniature ship on it. The kids thought at first the tiny people might be real and they were amazed when they disappeared at the end!
We also enjoyed walking all over the Cheyes IV Whale Chaser, and climbing up and down ladders and looking at the little beds the men had to sleep in. They also had a turn steering the ship and talking on the radio. The whole place was very quiet as most schools have already gone back this week, so it was great to have most of the exhibits entirely to ourselves. You can choose to go on a guided tour, but we chose to do it alone so we could stop for toilet breaks etc without having to worry about keeping up with a group. It was lovely and relaxing this way.
Then we got to have a late lunch in the lovely Whalers Galley Cafe with the spectacular views. It's a great cafe to head out to sometimes when we feel like a coffee and a snack or a bit of lunch as it's only about 15 mins drive from home.
